projekt is a design based fair trade initiative, providing ongoing skills training, through workshops and lessons, to their members.
The skills of the craftswomen continue to develop, so that new elements can continuously be added to their range of scarves, jewellery and homeware. the work is done in 100% cotton, with suede and linen additions.
projekt provides income to 28 women from Imizamo yethu, the informal settlement in hout bay, cape town. projekt has grown from 3 craftswomen in 2007 to being able to support 28 women in 2010.
they use crochet, because it needs only one tool - a small hook - and as well as being a widely spread craft through Africa, it can be done anywhere, also allowing women to work from home.
within the laid-down design parameters there is a great deal of scope for creativity and personal expression and each of the women brings her own style and grace to her work.
